Pembroke Symphony Orchestra -              2024/2025


A BIT ABOUT US
The orchestra provides member musicians with the opportunity to perform in an orchestral setting, and provides the listening public with classical and modern music.
Members also enjoy the opportunity of practicing and performing with the seasoned professionals and soloists the group sometimes hires to round out our roster.  Our conductors are music professionals and provide weekly orchestral instruction.

The PSO needs volunteers to help us with such things as: concert production, advertising, and fund-raising.
We welcome all musicians to join us if there is an opening available.
Current openings:  horn, oboe, trombone, trumpet, all strings.
Membership fees:  Adult $150 per season, Student $100 per season. 
Rehearsals every Thursday - 6:45 to 9:15 pm at Festival Hall
​Season Opener:  October 26th, 2024.

Principal Conductor

Eve Legault

Canadian conductor  Eve Legault is originally from Gatineau, Quebec.  Last season, Eve became the first woman to conduct her hometown orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Gatineau.  Other engagements included a concert as Guest Conductor with the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra.

Eve is currently the Principal Conductor of the Pembroke Symphony Orchestra in Ontario.  She is also an Associate Conductor in Tapestry Opera's Women in Musical Leadership program.  In 2024, she worked twice as an Assistant Conductor at the Manitoba Opera.  She also aasisted at Opera Kelowna and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.  During the summer, she was a Guest Conductor and the first Assistant Conductor with the National Youth Orchestra of Canad.

Between 2020 and 2022, she received 16 individual contracts at the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, as an Assistant Conductor to Alexander Shelley, John Storgards, Dalia Stasevska and Xian Zhang.

Previously, she fulfilled several roles within the international opera community. 
Eve completed graduate studies in 3 disciplines: Conducting, Piano and Accompanying. She holds a DMA  from the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where she was bestowed the Helen Cohn Award. 

Eve was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada  Doctoral Fellowship. She also received four grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to participate in conducting masterclasses in Europe.  Last February, Eve took part in a masterclass in Finland with Sasha Makila and the Helsinki Metropolitan Orchestra.  She was selected by the musicians as the "Orchestra's Favorite Conductor".

President: John Artymko 
John Artymko is a trumpeter, Elementary Teacher, Forester and Wood Scientist with degrees from University of Toronto and University of Ottawa.  He started with the PSO 25 years ago.  John incorporates his passion for music into his school community and church choir.  He is indebted to two people in his early years who nurtured in him a love for music: his mother, Anne, who sang beautifully; and his high school music teacher, George Placewicz, who inspired students to bring the joy of music to their audience.  He considers himself very fortunate to have a wife and daughters who also love listening to, and performing, music.











Vice President/ Artistic Director/ Acting Concertmaster: Kirsten Waymann
Kirsten Waymann (violin) is a professional musician and received her music degree from the University of Ottawa. She was a member of the string ensemble of the Canadian Armed Forces prior to pursuing a career as a symphony musician. She has played with Symphony Nova Scotia, as well as the Windsor and Niagara Symphonies. While freelancing in Toronto, she played with the musicals “Phantom of the Opera” and “Showboat”. Kirsten has also enjoyed playing in shows featuring performers such as Il Divo, Josh Groban, the Irish Tenors and Leahy. Kirsten presently plays with the Deep River and Pembroke Symphony Orchestras, and has appeared as a guest soloist with both. She also plays with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, North Bay Symphony Orchestra, Kingston Symphony Orchestra and a number of small orchestral ensembles in the Ottawa Valley. Kirsten teaches violin and cello in Petawawa.


Treasurer: Marc Séguin
Marc Séguin is a local musician and artisan who calls Pembroke home since obtaining his BMus and BEd from the University of Ottawa. He has performed with different ensembles in Ottawa and the valley such as the SAXART Saxophone Quartet, the Singing Christmas Tree Orchestra and other local musical productions including "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", "Mary Poppins", Sir Karl Jenkins' "STABAT MATER" and "Newsies". Marc has been a regular member of the Pembroke Symphony Orchestra since 2015 and is currently also part of the Soulstice 5+ jazz group.













Secretary: Linda Taylor-Hall 
Linda Taylor-Hall is a graduate of the University of Ottawa (B.A. Hon. Music) and the University of Western Ontario (B.Ed.) in 1983. She has studied the French Horn with Nat Battersby and Martin Hackleman.  After 28 years, she retired as a high school Music Teacher of award-winning ensembles. Linda has performed with many ensembles including the National Capital Concert Band, the Nepean Concert Band, the Kanata Symphony Orchestra, and the Divertimento Orchestra. She joined PSO last year as the 2nd Horn player after moving to Eganville with her husband, John. She is looking forward to her new role as Secretary of PSO.











Education Coordinator: Laura Vokey
Laura Vokey is a violinist and music educator with degrees from Memorial University (BMus, BMusEd). Laura has played with PSO since she began calling Petawawa home eight years ago. She has a heart for sharing music with our community, from the very youngest to the oldest and everyone in between. You can find her doing baby/family music times at the Petawawa Public Library or ONYVa (French Early ON, Pembroke) and at Pine Arts Collective, where she teaches violin and early childhood music classes. In her role as Education Coordinator with PSO, Laura works to make more connections between our orchestra, our schools and community at large.

Community Outreach: Cheryl St-Élier
Cheryl St-Élier is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Music, with honours in Music Education.  She has taught in the public education system throughout Canada, and currently teaches Music in private practice.  For a couple of decades she has had the pleasure of playing with the Tiffany Trio, being Music Director of the Chapel of St. Francis of Assisi on Garrison CFB Petawawa, playing with a variety of community endeavours including with the Pembroke Community Choir, Pembroke Musical Society,  Streetlight Theatre, Military Wives Choir, Deep River Symphony and different churches.  For the past few years, she has played with the Pembroke Symphony Orchestra and been a member of the executive as Director of Community Outreach

Librarian: Tamara Goligher


  
Tamara Goligher, BMus, BA, is our Symphony’s Principle Percussionist and Timpanist. She holds degrees in Music, and in Classical Studies, from Queens University. Tamara studied timpani and percussion under Mr. Greg Runions and highland snare drumming under Drum Sergeant Ian Reid and Warrant Officer Douglas Kraft. She has almost 30 years of experience as a highland snare drummer and over 20 years as a percussionist. Tamara has played with the Pembroke Symphony since 2011, becoming Principal Percussionist in 2016. In addition to the Pembroke Symphony, she has played with the Deep River Symphony, the Pembroke Community Choir, the Petawawa Military wives’ choir and with several other musical organizations, and was Lead Drummer in both the Napanee and District, and the Princess of Wales Own Regiment pipe bands, where she taught highland snare drumming. She is also a member of our executive and is the Symphony’s Librarian, where she utilizes her background as a museum curator and archivist to make sure everyone has wonderful music to play, and is Director of Fundraising.


   










Assistant Librarian: Pia Voorand
Pia-Leena Voorand is a graduate of the University of Waterloo, Environmental Studies, Honours Urban and Regional Planning.  She was an elementary school teacher for 27 years and ended her career as a Music and Dance Specialist for students from kindergarten to grade 8.  Pia has played the violin with the Pembroke Symphony since 1993.  She has also played in small ensembles for dinner parties and weddings. Most recently she is a member of the YoYo Mommas Fiddling group in Barry’s Bay.
